Birmingham’s oaks, maples, hickories and sweetgums put on a great show every fall – and then it all ends up on the lawn. A few leaves never hurt anyone, but a thick, wet layer left for weeks can do real damage.
Why leaves should not stay on the lawn
- A thick layer blocks sunlight and traps moisture, which weakens grass going into dormancy and invites fungal disease.
- Matted leaves smother the turf – in spring you find thin, yellow patches where the piles sat.
- Leaves on walks and drives get slick, stain concrete and clog drains and gutters downhill.
When do the leaves fall in Birmingham?
Most trees drop their leaves from late October through early December. Oaks are the stragglers – some hold on until January. That is why a single cleanup in mid-November often has to be repeated.
How many cleanups does a yard need?
- Light tree cover: one cleanup in mid-December can be enough.
- A few big trees: two visits – late November and early January.
- Wooded lots (common in Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook): every two to three weeks from early November to January.
Mulch or remove?
A light layer of leaves can be mulched into the lawn with a mower – the small pieces break down and feed the soil. If you cannot see the grass through the leaves after mulching, there are too many: remove the excess. Shredded leaves also make good mulch for beds.
